Environmental assessment of a new generation battery: The magnesium-sulfur system

As environmental concerns mostly drive the electrification of our economy and corresponding increase in demand for battery storage systems, information about potential impacts different systems is required. However, this kind scarce emerging post-lithium such as magnesium-sulfur (MgS) battery. Therefore, we use life cycle assessment following a cradle-to-gate perspective to quantify cumulative energy per Wh capacity hypothetical MgS (46 Wh/kg). Furthermore, also estimate global warming (0.33 kg CO2 eq/Wh) , fossil depletion (0.09 oil eq / Wh), ozone (2.5E-08 CFC-11/Wh) metal (0.044 Fe eq/Wh), associated with production. The modelled based on an existing prototype pouch cell hypothetically optimised according current state art lithium-ion batteries (LIB), exploring future improvement potentials. It turns out that initial (non-optimised) cannot compete LIB terms density or performance, mainly due high share non-active components, decreasing its performance substantially. if assumed evolutions composition are achieved overcome design hurdles reach comparable lifespan, efficiency, cost safety levels LIB; then has significant outperform both LIB, lithium-sulfur batteries.
